On the standard view, perceptual experience causes belief, and also justifies belief. This leaves us with, as Davidson puts it, “the difficulty of transmuting a cause into a reason”. The paper argues that the difficulty is insoluble, and that the connection between experience and belief is constitutive, rather than causal.
