The Department of Philosophy has been the fortunate recipient of many generous gifts over the years, which have contributed greatly to making Berkeley a leading center for philosophical education and research. We are entering an era of sharply increased competition, however, in which the support of our alumni and friends is more important than ever.
Current fund-raising priorities include endowed chairs for our faculty and endowed fellowship funds to support our graduate students. The distinction of our programs depends crucially on our ability to attract to Berkeley first-rate scholars and teachers of philosophy. But we lack the resources of the major private universities with which we compete for the best faculty and students. Contributions in these areas are of vital importance if we are to retain our standing as a Department worthy of the world’s most distinguished public university.
Donations to our annual fund are highly valued and welcome at any time. Your gift will help us to maintain the collections of the Howison Library; support our lively program of philosophical events; underwrite research and travel opportunities for our students; and enable us to sponsor a variety of activities that specifically benefit our undergraduate majors (including the philosophy club, the undergraduate philosophy journal Harvest Moon, and regular receptions and social events). In addition, Moses Hall needs some physical improvements (including repainting, signing, and seating); contributions to the annual fund will support this project as well.
Contributions can be sent directly to the Department (attention: Department Manager) at the address below. You can also contribute online, using your credit card, on the give.berkeley.edu website. If you have questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or our Department Chair.
Many thanks for your interest and support!
