Islamic Philosophy in the Margins

In recent years, the study of Islamic intellectual history has turned increasingly toward long-neglected regions and periods. A new generation of scholars has broken important ground, working with materials that range from South Asia and the Volga region to West Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, sustained attention has shifted to the postclassical period and its rich and often underappreciated contributions.

This conference centers on the discipline of philosophy in regions that, until recently, were regarded as marginal to its production in Islamic lands. It highlights in particular the work of a younger generation of scholars at Berkeley and LMU who are excavating significant themes and bringing these so-called margins to the forefront of scholarly inquiry. Within the postclassical period, the papers presented here focus on Bahrayn, South Asia, West Africa, and the Volga region, collectively reconfiguring our understanding of the geographical and intellectual scope of Islamic philosophy.
