Philosophy Colloquium Peter Godfrey-Smith (University of Sydney) Expression, Tolerance, and Autonomy |
A framework developed with Ben Kerr for representing different forms of tolerance is applied to questions around freedom of expression. Here I make use of a 1972 paper by Tim Scanlon (now largely rejected by Scanlon) that features a link between freedom of expression and the value of autonomy in belief formation. I’ll look at arguments against this appeal to autonomy made by Susan Brison and Scanlon himself. “Academic freedom” and related topics will be discussed along the way.
