This course will focus on freedom and related issues. The first half of the class will explore different theories of what freedom is, and why it matters. The second half will turn to more applied questions: What, if anything, is morally problematic about paternalistic policies? And how should we think about freedom of speech and its limits?
As taught this semester, Phil 116 satisfies the ethics requirement for the philosophy major.
