Responsibility at Planetary Scale: Ethics and Governance of Climate Intervention

Geoengineering is likely to become an increasing subject of discussion in the coming years, due to insufficient progress at decarbonization. By “geoengineering,” we refer to a range of technologies—from large-scale carbon removal to marine cloud brightening, sea ice management, solar radiation management, and others. Geoengineering raises questions about both research governance and potential deployment. What kind of global body might make decisions concerning these technologies? What values should guide such decisions? How might diverse cultural attitudes toward nature be represented? Could governance institutions manage ecological risks and prevent geopolitical conflict?
