Appearances and their Role in Cognition

In this talk, I’ll offer an account of experience on which appearances are not qualities of things. I’ll offer also an account of the role of appearances in empirical cognition. Appearances play, I’ll argue, a vital role, but this role does not consist in providing us with some bits of knowledge or in conferring justification on some of our beliefs.
