Philosophy 7

Existentialism is often associated with a denial of a human essence and an emphasis on individual self-creation. As a philosophical movement, it emerged right after the Second World War and reached its peak in the mid 20th century. This course explores central existentialist topics in the writings of Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Frantz Fanon. These topics include absurdity, ambiguity, bad faith, embodiment, freedom, oppression, recognition, violence, and work. We will also track these themes in films and literary texts from that period.
