DESCRIPTION:What is the difference between time and space? This paper propo
ses a \nnovel answer: the temporal direction is that direction on the manif
old \nof events in which our best theories can tell the strongest\, most \n
informative “stories.” Put another way\, time is that direction in which \n
our theories can obtain as much determinism as possible. I make two \nargum
ents. The first is a general one based on an empiricist theory of \nlaws. I
argue that according to this theory time is distinguished as the \ndirecti
on of informative strength. The second argument is a more \nspecific illust
ration of the first: understanding ‘strength’ as having a \nwell-posed Cauc
hy problem\, I show that for a wide class of equations the \ndesire for str
ength does indeed distinguish the temporal direction. Not \nonly that\, but
the argument rigorously connects three otherwise \nmysterious connections
among temporal features to one another. The paper \nthen explores the ramif
ications of this theory for various problems in \nthe philosophy of time.
